8 tips for sensible home heating

Heating and hot water bills are a headache for many homeowners. Can sensible use of heating save money?

How to use district heating?

System heat should be used sensibly – thanks to this you can take care of the environment and reduce heating bills.

1. Do not cover the radiator

An uncovered radiator is a waste of energy necessary to heat the room. When it is covered, the heat is blocked. If the radiator is discouraging by its appearance, it is worth replacing it with a decorative radiator, which can be purchased for as little as a few hundred zlotys.

If you happen to dry clothes on a radiator, stop this practice. Drying clothes on a radiator causes a loss of as much as 10% of heat.

2. Install radiator screens

By installing radiator screens behind the radiator, you can save as much as 5% of heat. You can make this addition yourself from cardboard, styrofoam and aluminum foil.

3. Check the efficiency of radiators

An unvented radiator does not provide enough heat, which is why regular venting is so important. The size of the heating units should be appropriate for the size of the room they are in. If the radiators are too small, the room will not be heated effectively.

4. Monitor the room temperature at all times

Adjust the room temperature to your personal preferences – this can be done using the thermostat that is mounted by the radiator. The room temperature should vary depending on the purpose of the room:

  • in the bedroom, a temperature of around 20°C is recommended for better sleep;
  • in the living room the temperature should be around 21°C;
  • in the bathroom the highest temperature should be around 24°C.

When you leave the house, it’s a good idea to set the thermostat at a lower temperature – ideally by a few degrees. Remember not to set the temperature too low as you can quickly cool down rooms. More energy will be used to reheat than to maintain a lower temperature.

If you don’t want to constantly control the heat on your thermostat, it’s worth investing in smart thermostats that you can simply program for the day. It’s a good idea to take individual household preferences into account when doing this.

5. Ventilate rooms briefly and intensely

Airing rooms affects the well-being of household members and prevents the formation of mold and mildew. If you are afraid of smog, it is worth buying an air purifier or a plant.

Before you start ventilating, turn down the radiator. Remember that ventilation cannot last longer than 15 minutes, this is the optimum time, so as not to cool the room.

6. Replace windows with modern ones

Replacing windows with tight and modern ones is a costly investment but thanks to this you can keep heat in the room. Remember to keep your windows closed on a sunny day – it is the natural heat that warms the rooms. Keep windows closed at night to avoid heat loss.

7. Retain heat in common areas

Save heat not only in your apartment, but also in common areas. Make sure that doors in common areas are well locked. All tenants pay for heating the common parts of the building.

8. Save hot water

Use hot water rationally. Choose taps with thermostats so that you don’t waste water unnecessarily when setting the temperature and pressure. It is also worth installing aerators, which reduce water consumption.
