How to divide a child’s room into zones?

Children’s room is a place in which you put most of your heart. You want it to be aesthetically pleasing and at the same time a place of safe development for your child. How to plan its division into zones so that it is an exceptionally functional place?

A child’s room must be a space that adapts to the child at each stage of its development. It’s worth dividing it into zones that make it easier for the child to concentrate or relax – just as your rooms should have a designated place for rest and work. If you do not know how to functionally plan the division of a child’s room into zones, you have to read!

The golden ratio

Properly zoning your child’s room allows you to usefully adapt it to your child’s current needs and even thoughtfully accommodate their development. There are also purely practical issues – a room divided into specific zones is simply much easier to clean, and thus you can teach your child responsibility and regularity

The division of the room into three zones – study, play and rest – is worth implementing already at the stage of kindergarten, although it is most useful from the first grades of primary school. This is when the child begins to establish more complex relationships with peers who will also visit your home

The division of the room into a zone of study, play and rest allows you to maximize the use of even a small space in such a way that it meets all the requirements of a young resident

So that the room grows with the child

Before you start choosing furniture for a child’s room, it is worth to realize how quickly your child grows. Her needs change at a frightening pace and, just like clothes, she may also grow out of non-functional furniture. Therefore, it is worth choosing furnishings that will grow with your child – adjustable armchairs and chairs, a bed several centimeters longer than currently needed, and roomy storage compartments and containers, in which you can store souvenirs or furnishings

Study zone

The learning zone should appear in the children’s room already at the preschool stage. Then you can sit with your child at the desk to spend time creatively – for example, creating stickers, painting or drawing. If your child does not associate a desk only with homework, he or she may not be discouraged by it after the first weeks of primary school

An advantage will be placing the study area near a source of natural light (e.g. under the window). It is also worth buying a powerful standing lamp to illuminate the work area even during winter afternoons

A desk must not only have a spacious top, but also functional drawers where you can store utensils and notebooks. Office organizers are also a great solution. Remember that the study area should also include a whiteboard – a cork or magnetic one will work best. This is where you can keep loose notes, a timetable, as well as urgent reminders that will always be in view.

The play area

The play zone is a place that will quickly become a space not only for your child, but also for his peers. It can be delimited by a piece of carpet or a soft mat, the boundaries of which also mark the separation between the play area and the rest of the room

It is important that this area includes soft cushions, pouffes and places to sit, as well as containers and shelves for toys. Remember to agree with your child on the fundamental principles of cleaning this area – he or she should take care to organize their games and blocks, as well as to put them in the right place

In the play area, pouffes, which can also serve as convenient storage, will be a great solution. Thanks to their use, you expand the usable space of the room, but without chaos and clutter.

Sleeping zone

In the first years of life, children often suffer from night terrors – they do not want to fall asleep without the light on, they wake up at night terrified of nightmares. That’s why it’s so important that the sleep zone is a comfortable and safe place where your child will feel comfortable

When you are choosing furniture for the bedroom corner, remember the golden rule about the bed – always longer than you need at the moment. This way, despite the growth of the child, the bed will constantly fit

Also think carefully about the choice of mattress – it’s good that it’s breathable, moldable and hypoallergenic. The bed should be spacious and wide. This will not only allow the child to rest comfortably in any position, but also possible visits of the parent when the toddler is sick and needs care
