A partition wall is a type of internal room division, unlike a load-bearing wall it is not an essential structural element of a building
It can be an ideal way to create an amazing arrangement of our space. What is most important – we do not need to call professionals to work, we can successfully make a partition ourselves.
A popular idea is to remove the wall dividing the kitchen and living room, but such a barrier can also be confidently built from scratch in any place. Most often it is installed from plasterboard or brick. This is an ideal way to divide too large space into smaller ones and create a new room for example for a child.
An interesting way to divide e.g. a living room is to build a low partition wall, so called half-wall or wall. It can separate the living room from the dining room without darkening the room (especially when there is only one window in the room and we do not want to invest in new lamps). Installing partitions is also popular in bathrooms, for example to separate the toilet from the bath room.
The easiest way to put up a partition wall is the framing technique, which means putting it up with plasterboard. It is a system of drywall construction, it consists in the assembly of a frame made of aluminum or metal profiles, to which later cardboard-plaster panels are attached. Such a wall is not extremely durable, so we use them in rooms that do not need a permanent division.
The technique is relatively simple. First, you need to make a frame framework for the wall, which can be placed on an existing substrate (for example, on panels or parquet)
For this we need aluminum or metal profiles for partitions, which we mount to the substrate, side walls and ceiling. The whole construction must be additionally reinforced, if we plan to use doors or windows in it, as well as some loads, e.g. in the form of suspended shelves
Then we close the frame with gypsum boards from both sides, it will be also good to fill the interior with acoustic wool, to eliminate penetration of voices or other noises. Then it is enough to put a smooth finish on it and then wallpaper or tiles.
Its assembly consists in brick or foam-concrete block masonry with the use of mortar. Its construction is more demanding and the whole wall is thicker and heavier than a plasterboard wall. It has to be placed on a concrete floor or directly on the ceiling
You can also make such a wall yourself but it would be worthwhile to consult at least the load capacity of the ceiling with a specialist to know whether we need to make additional reinforcements.
You can also build a partition wall on a frame made of wood, which is similar to a frame made of plaster, but instead of aluminum or steel profiles we put wooden beams. Wood must be high quality, strong and durable, it is good to impregnate it additionally, to protect such construction from moisture.
The most solid construction is the partition wall made of bricks. It is built in wet technique with the use of mortar. Such a wall is thick and durable, ideal if we intend to load it with hanging elements, for example shelves or others. The main disadvantage is low sound insulation
Such a partition wall should be placed directly on the partition floor or on the ceiling. Due to the weight of such a partition wall, it would be good to consult a specialist or entrust this work to appropriate professionals. It is also possible to make such a wall of clinker bricks. The whole does not require additional finishing later, and its raw appearance gives the room a loft character.
The brick partition wall is extremely resistant to loads, looks designer, but is extremely thick, which takes a lot of space. It is also an expensive investment. The advantage of making a partition wall from plasterboard is that they are easy to put up, in addition, the materials for their construction are relatively cheap and light.
Ultimately, the choice of the appropriate wall is determined primarily by its purpose and the spatial capabilities of our apartment or house.
